The foreword is written by a Catholic scholar. He says some of the very things that I have just read in Ancient-Future Faith.
The chapters are broken down as individual "codes."
Chapter 1: Who was Mary Magdalene?
This gives a good explanation of who Mary of Magdala was, and treats the references to her in Scripture, the early fathers, and the proto-Gnostic documents that are used as the basis of the claim that she was married to Jesus. The author points out that there are only two proto-Gnostic documents that could be taken to suggest such a marriage. One of the documents is so damaged that it is impossible to conclude definitely what it says. Furthermore, the style of these documents indicates that the relationship spoken of between Mary and Jesus could be a symbolic or purely spiritual one, with Mary standing for Lady Wisdom of the Proverbs.
Chapter 2: Was Jesus married?
The author deals with the arguments that Jesus was married. The author points out that, even if he were, it is no challenge to his divinity. Then he proceeds to examine the evidence and arguments that Jesus was married.
This is turning out to be quite a good book. It puts the debate about the Gnostic documents in an interesting light.
